Rise Up and be Courageous

Courage, it is such a beautiful, yet a unapproachable word. Do you remember being a young child, sitting on the edge of your bed, feet swinging, the room pitch black? Everything looked like monsters in the shadows, and you were more than certain the Boogy Man was living under your bed. I bet you were terrified like Medusa was looking you in the face. But you know what? It’s time you be like Neville Longbottom – it is time you rise up and be courageous, my friends!

Courage comes in many forms – speaking out against your friends, climbing ropes over a rainforest, or even something as simple yet difficult as saying “please forgive me” or “I forgive you”. But trust me, when you gain courage, everything becomes so much easier. All your fears just melt away.

Or maybe you already have that courageous, which is fabulous. That means it is time you share it with others. So how? Well, to start you off I have a poem I actually wrote for someone else.

A girl [Or You!] With a Lion’s Heart

Courage is the flame
A beautiful, roaring flame
Sparked by sight
Motivation
Imagination
Love, energy
Virtus leonis
We learn from the courageous
The young, and free spirited
Wild, wild they are!
Cum Puella A leonis in cor meum
So live on! Courageous you shall be
Forever on

How do I gain courage?

Okay, friend, here is what I want you to do. Right now. No exceptions.

Give yourself a compliment. Then give the nearest person to you a compliment. Do it, and I promise your eyes will already be much brighter. Okay, now here is your list to complete today:

Compliment yourself
It is hard to do this sometimes, I know. And I know it takes courage, but you have that in you! Compliment yourself, look in the mirror each morning. Tell yourself you are beautiful, you love your eyes, your hair, your smile.

Like I said in a previous post, smiling makes all the difference. Yet what if you lack the courage to smile, because you fear how you look? Don’t let that stop you! You are beautiful and unique in your own amazing way.

Do the unthinkable
Try something new! Getting out of your comfort zone is hard, but with practice, it can be achieved. Never heard of a mango salad with chili-lime salt or olive oil and ice cream? Give them a shot! Odd food combos are a brilliant way to expand your courage. Oh, and personally? The thought of olive oil and ice cream makes me want to gag, but maybe I will give it a try someday as well!

Be spontaneous
Should you stick to your schedule and not delay things? Of course! Being spontaneous just means you do things at random, so give it a shot sometime! Put one day aside where you will break free from your schedule. Be random, be yourself, be free. Or even if it is just occasionally throughout a day. It really will give you that hidden courage!

Be spontaneous for a bit – or even more often – and let go of your schedule, time checking, and pens. Be YOU for a bit!

Stand up for what is right
We all have our own beliefs, and that is beautiful. Yet many of are scared to fight for what we believe in – for what we see to be right. You know, it’s hard. I understand. But take that leap of faith like Neville Longbottom did when he was younger, standing against his friends. He believed in what he was doing, and that made all the difference.

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends” ~ Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Live without fear
In a sense, many of us fear to be courageous. You can do it, just believe in yourself. Take fear and bury it in the ground, along with the phrases “I cannot”, “It’s too hard”, “I don’t know” and any other negative thing. Bury it! Then throw away any access to that negativity. If you start saying, “I cannot…” Then shut your mouth and replace it with “I can.”

“Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” ~ Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird

How do I help others be courageous?

Okay, you have made it this far, congrats! The best advice I have been taught and will now give you is: believe.  Believe first in yourself, and soon others will follow. Because confidence and courage go hand in hand. Second, if people ask you, tell them what I have taught you. It will make the whole difference, opening up and stretching your horizons. Now go make me proud and BE courageous!

Until next time,

  2. I had a hard time getting past the first paragraph! If I had been terrified of goblins in the dark, I would not have been sitting up, swinging my legs. I would have been huddled under the covers, or more likely, climbing into bed with my parents. They hated that, which I can understand 70 years later.

    • You know what, you are right. See, as children, they all have their own course on reacting to fear. Some – most, actually – would do exactly that: hide under covers or run to their parents. To be honest, I did that a lot myself! But then you have some as well, who they might be shivering, terrified, but they are half on edge – “Do I run and hide or do I fight?” It’s that fight or flight stage. But good point!
